Glass Petals
Borrowing from ageless folk while adding heavier rhythms, Glass Petals bases its sound around strong vocals, intelligent lyrics, and unique band arrangements that consist of various strings, horns, percussion, and textures. At the heart of the group is singer/guitarist/composer Tim Smisek. Initially forming the band in Chicago, the self-titled debut album was recorded with an exceptional collective of musicians. Tim then shifted base to Paris for two years, and after a summer tour around Europe, eventually made his way to Prague, where he now resides and is currently working on a new album.
— Tim, how did the idea of creating a band come to you? Let us go back to the beginning of the story...
— I’ve been playing music my entire life with my family. My dad is a musician who plays guitar and sings, my twin brother plays bass, my older brother plays drums, and my little sister sings. We had a family band while I was growing up, and I started playing for parties and in bars at a young age. Then I studied music in Chicago for 4 years. It was at this time that I decided to form a band and I started recording the first album, making videos, and organizing live shows. I had been writing songs for several years, and I like performing my own music. The ideas for new songs come to my mind spontaneously. Often I’m scrambling to write down lyrics or sing a melody into a voice recorder before I forget it. You never know when the inspiration will come.
— What style of music do you play? You call it “Lumberjack Rock”, I’ve never heard of it, what is it exactly?
— Yeah, where did you read this (laughing)? Well, I guess it’s something that doesn’t really exist yet. I’m from Minnesota and there is kind of this history of lumberjacks. One day I was just thinking that it would be a good way to describe my music, because it’s like folk rock, but with a bit more power and weight. So the idea of “Lumberjack Rock” as a new genre for my music was born.
Glass Petals?
— And what does the name of your band “Glass Petals” symbolize?
— Music has always been your main job, did you ever do anything else besides music?
— Well, I’ve had a lot of different odd jobs along the way. I used to work for the Chicago Theatre for a while, landscaping, as an assistant for a motivational speaker, then as a tour guide. I’ve also taught some music lessons, guitar lessons and so on... but I always try to keep music as my main focus. It’s not always easy to make a living with music. Sometimes it can be good, but there are no promises, and the amount of money you earn changes each time. You really have to work hard, organizing good shows, selling CDs and merchandise, and try to get your music to people involved in television and film.
— Do you have any producers, managers, or people who help you?
— Yes, I have some excellent people who help me and work with me on different aspects of my music. For example, on the first album I was working with Crown Line Music, and the president of this label, Chris Harris, helped me a lot. He was responsible for almost all the recording, mixing, and mastering of that album. Here in Europe many people are helping me to organize concerts/tours and record my second album as well. Plus, I’m always working with talented photographers, film makers, and graphic designers to achieve the visual goals associated with my music.
— It seems that a creative person cannot always be a good manager at the same time... Is this true?
— Is becoming famous important to you? When you are composing the songs do you think about how commercial it will be, how easily you can sell it?
— It’s a difficult thing to think about sometimes because it’s kind of a struggle. You want to create your music, something you’re really proud of. However, you also consider what other people will think, because ultimately you want them to hear it and like it. I prefer to do what I truly believe in and hope that people will dig it. If it’s good, eventually it will catch on and the radio will start to play it and more people will become fans and you’ll find success that way. It’s not my goal to make my music commercial, because if I want to continue playing music for the rest of my life and have a steady, honest career, I just need to be myself. So when I’m writing my songs I try not to think about it because it ruins the creative process and kills the inspiration.
— Why did you move from the United States to Europe? I know that you lived in Paris for a few years too, right?
— Have you changed anything about your music style since you moved to Europe? How has it influenced you and your music?
— In your opinion, what are the differences between modern European and American music cultures?
— I believe that the differences are not so much between the countries but between each city. For example, Chicago has a big hip-hop music scene, Nashville has more of a country music scene, Berlin is know for it’s electronic music, and others like Paris and Prague are known more for their folk music genres. Also, the radio stations in both America and Europe play almost exactly the same international hits by the most famous artists. So it’s really only the live concerts and local music that
— American music is popular all over the world, but I don’t think any Czech, French, or let’s say Hungarian musicians have a good chance of becoming famous in the USA... Why do you think it doesn’t work the other way around?
— I know you have some Czech roots. Now living in the Czech Republic do you recognize anything Czech in yourself?
— And what do you think about Czech people, do they have any special characteristics?
— From what I’ve seen so far, Czech people seem really relaxed, open-minded, and they like to enjoy music, art, and life in general, with good food and of course plenty of Czech beer... which suits me well. The other thing I like is that Prague is a very international city, so it’s easy to make friends from all over the world. It’s great living here, and I plan on staying for a while.
— What projects are you planning next?
— I’m working on recording a new album, and would like to organize another summer tour around Europe. Also, I’ve been arranging different versions of my songs to be performed with a string trio (cello, viola, violin) and want to create a video series documenting this.
— What music do you listen to? Do you have any favorite singers?
There’s a really great singer/songwriter from Sweden that I like listening to lately, he’s called The Tallest Man On The Earth. His lyrics are amazing, and he’s an excellent folk guitar player. I’ve also got some really talented friends who make good music, so I enjoy listening to their stuff and supporting them. It doesn’t really matter what genre, if it’s good quality music and I’m in the right mood, I’ll listen to it.
— Is there (theoretically) any price that you would agree to take to never sing again for the rest of your life?
— Where do you usually perform in Prague, where can people see your next concerts?
— I regularly play at a place called Restaurant Anna (address: 22 Dlouhá), but I’ve also got some bigger shows coming up.
